TONGEREN - After a fifty-year wait the moment has finally arrived. Once again, the city of Tongeren can boast its own brewery and city beers. The story commences with the 2009 Coronation Celebrations, a festival that is held every seven. To mark the occasion, Davy Daniëls and Bart Durlet launched a city beer under the name of Amburon Blond. Both were exclusively involved in contract brewing with the Anders brewery. Anders has now been sold and Davy has founded the Amburon Belgian Craftbrewery...

The question doesn’t throw Luc De Laet, the man who has done just that at the De Koninck brewery. “We share our respect for traditional crafts,” he responds. “And we are both going back to the roots of our trade. Each animal has its own story. We use its meat in the most sustainable way possible, ‘from nose to tail’.”. Crafts and everything ‘artisan’ is hip these days...

ROESELARE - The origins of Flanders Red Ale (Vlaams roodbruin bier as it is known in this part of Belgium) lie in the area around Roeselare and Kortrijk. These beers are a prime example of the noble art of ‘cutting’ (blending). The Rodenbach beers are left to mature in one of the brewery’s 294 upright foeders. At every stage of the brewing process the brewmasters and cellar masters carry out tastings of the soured foeder beer which, when the time is just right, is blended or ‘cut’ with young beer. The Rodenbach brewers have been expert at the art of ‘cutting’ (blending) ever since 1821. After almost two hundred years this ‘grande dame’ from Roeselare has been given a make-over...

BASECLES - You may not have heard of this little village, halfway between Tournai and Mons. Its former quarries are now filled with water where the black marble that adorns Cologne Cathedral was once hewn; all traces of quarrying have vanished. Visit the Musée de la Pierre et du Marbre on the market square to gain an insight into this once-flourishing industry. If you visit this small village on the the first Sunday in September you will find that this usually quiet place is buzzing and bubbling; this is thanks to the local microbrewery, Brasserie des Carrières. The name of this brewery – Carrière, is French for quarry – and is already set in stone. It was set up by best mates Julien Slabbinck and François Amorison, who are brewing at a site located between two former quarries...
