Authentic Belgian Blonde Abbey Beer

The Beer

In 2016 the abbey of Val-Dieu, not far from the city of Liège, celebrated its 800th anniversary - 800 years young and still going strong. Among the celebrations was the launch of this light, refreshing blonde, Cuvée 800.

This beer’s hoppy character comes from dry hopping, which also enhances its citrus notes. The Val-Dieu beers are also noteworthy for the use of soft water, taken from a reservoir created by damming the river Gileppe in an area of Belgium that is known for the quality of its water.

The brewery also produces Val-Dieu Blonde, Brune, Triple, Grand Cru and Noël; beers that are all brewed in the grounds of the abbey.

Val-Dieu can look back on a tumultuous history. By some miracle, this former Cistercian abbey was the only one in Belgium to survive the French Revolution.

In 2001 the last three monks left Val-Dieu, but since then a lay Christian community that lives by the rules of St. Benedict has been living in the abbey. The surviving buildings, including the imposing church with its characteristic spire, date back to the 18th century.

Every year, Val-Dieu attracts thousands of visitors, and it remains a symbol of peace and contemplation.

This mission shines through clearly in its emblem: two intertwined rings with the motto ‘In Vinculo Pacis’ (in the bond of peace) that is almost omnipresent around the abbey and also appears on the glasses and beer mats of the abbey brewery.

Alcohol

5.5 % ABV

Fermentation

Val-Dieu Cuvée 800 is a top-fermented beer that re-ferments in the bottle.

Ingredients

Val-Dieu Cuvée 800 is brewed with barley malt, Czech and German hops, water and yeast. It is dry-hopped with fresh hop cones.

Colour & Transparency

In the glass, this beer takes on a lovely golden-yellow colour below a snowy-white head.

Serving Temperature

6 - 10°C / 42-50°F

Serving Glass

Val-Dieu Cuvée 800 is poured into a specially designed, elegant, chalice-shaped degustation glass on a tall stem. This allows the aromas to come to the fore and helps support a robust head that stands up well.

Character, Tastes & Aromas

The hoppy character of the Val-Dieu Cuvée 800 comes from the dry hopping with fresh hop flowers. It is a light, refreshing beer with citrusy impressions.

Culinary

This light beer makes a fine pairing with an unpasteurised, blue-veined sheep’s cheese and also goes well with spicy Asian food.

Keeping and Storage

In the bottle Val-Dieu Cuvée 800 stores for up to 24 months; on tap for 6 months.

The Bottles should be stored upright in a dark and properly chilled environment.

Availability

Bottle ✔       On Tap

Val-Dieu Cuvée 800 is available in 33cl and 75cl bottles and on tap (20l, 30l kegs)

The brewery is well represented in and around the region close to the abbey but even abroad you will able to pick up their beers up via the usual channels thanks to the breweries ever increasing popularity.
