Beer on top at De Heeren van Liedekercke
DENDERLEEUW/BRUSSELS - Awarded the crown of best beer restaurant in the world. For five years in a row! De Heeren Van Liedekercke restaurant in Denderleeuw, not far from Brussels, has become an iconic destination for beer lovers, with a steady stream arriving on a pilgrimage to their beer and food mecca. As they book their table they ask about the vintage beers the two gentlemen owners, the heeren, have in stock and ask them to put a bottle or two aside for them. “It is especially gueuze fans who beat a path to our door,” Joost Du Four says with a knowing smile. “They know they can call on us to commission unique blends for special occasions like birthday celebrations." "What’s more, we stock all of the Belgian Trappists including bottles of an older vintage.” Here, beer is paid the utmost respect. For instance, If you ask for an Orval you can be assured it is at least six months old...
Microbreweries feel at home at Brassigaume
MARBEHAN - Fifteen years from its inception, the Brassigaume Festival has put itself firmly on the map. For microbreweries in the South of Belgium, this is the main showcase to display their wares. 26 breweries took part in the 2015 edition of this festival. The poster promises a taste of science fiction, with a beer traveller bursting out of a cloud of froth, carrying a barrel on his back and using a large, upside down beer glass as a helmet. However, here in the heart of the Ardennes, fiction could not be farther from my mind. I am in Marbehan and, before anyone corrects me, I know that Marbehan is really in the Gaume region; the area to the South of the Ardennes, starting at Orval Abbey and finishing at the French border...
Belgian beer styles: The return of Saison
HAINAUT - The saison beer style has made a comeback after a long absence. In the 1980s this traditional farm beer was all but dead. Fast-forward to 2015 and you will see almost two dozen Belgian saisons on the market. And this humble regional beer style now inspires microbrewers from around the world to produce their own versions. Saison has its roots firmly anchored in the Doornik (Tournai) region but is also easy to get hold of in and around the cities of Aalst, Liège and Hasselt. It’s a beer that was traditionally produced by small, artisan or family breweries that had neither the means nor the desire to push their beers out into wider markets...
Trappist beer, a trademark to be reckoned with...
The name ‘Trappist’ refers both to a religious order and to the world famous abbey beers that they produce. In Belgium there are six abbeys that belong to the order of the Trappists, otherwise known as the Cistercians of Strict Observance. They are: Achel, Chimay, Orval, Rochefort, Westmalle and Westvleteren, and they all brew beer. The name Trappist comes from the French abbey of Notre Dame de la Grande Trappe where the order was born. Trappist monks live a simple life following the rules laid down by St. Benedict in the 6th century CE...
