Beer Style

Zuid-Westvlaams Roodbruin

The Beer

Brewery Omer Vander Ghinste has a long tradition of beers based on both spontaneous and mixed fermentations. The very first beer launched by founder Omer Vander Ghinste, in 1892, was called ‘Ouden Tripel’ – a Zuid-Westvlaams roodbruin of mixed fermentation.

This beer style is one of the oldest in Belgium, and typical for the West Flanders region. For this reason, VanderGhinste Roodbruin was included in HORARB (Hoge raad voor de authentieke Vlaams Roodbruine bieren, or the High Council for Authentic Flemish Red-brown Beers). The Council is working towards European recognition for this type of roodbruin ale.

This beer has changed its name a number of times during the history of the brewery. Bellegems Oud Bruin is one of the better-known names used over the years. However, 2012 saw a return to the original name, last used back in 1982.

That was the occasion of the 120th anniversary of this family brewery, so fittingly the ale was re-baptised VanderGhinste Oud Bruin. And the look and feel of the label are old-school too, based as they are on a poster from the early 1920s.

Alcohol

5.5% ABV

Fermentation

This red-brown, high-fermentation beer matures in oak barrels (foeders) for a minimum of 18 months, and is then cut with a young beer. This is the time-honoured approach traditionally taken with such typical Flemish red ales.

Ingredients

VanderGhinste Roodbruin is brewed with all natural ingredients: water, yeast, barley malt, wheat, caramel malt and hops.

Colour & Transparency

This beer has that beautiful, full red-brown colour, a tone characteristic of this rare, but splendidly authentic Belgian beer-style. Don’t serve too cold, though, not if you want to achieve the perfect pouring result.

    Serving Temperature

    7 – 8 °C / 44 ° F – 46 °F

    Serving Glass

VanderGhinste Roodbruin has its own, brewery-designed glass. It is a traditional stemmed glass, with the original logo on the side, as is seen on the label.

      Character, Tastes & Aromas

The nose is filled with a sweet-and-sour aroma, with touches of fruit and wood. This ale’s particular taste is characterised by the excellent balance between the fruitiness of the yeast, the slight sweetness and the mildly sour taste so particular to a spontaneously fermented beer. The finish is very refreshing and satisfyingly thirst-quenching.

        Culinary

VanderGhinste Roodbruin forms a perfect partnership with grey shrimps and langoustines (scampi), both excellent North Sea produce landed locally. The freshly sour taste of the beer certainly stimulates the appetite, which makes it an ideal aperitif.

        Keeping and Storage

Thanks to its sourness, this beer can easily be kept for ten years, as is the case with most spontaneous fermentation beers. Its taste is likely to evolve with the years, but its sweet and sour character will remain the same.

        Availability

        Bottle ✔       On Tap

To be found in the supermarket, as well as in Belgian cafés. This beer is brewed all the year around, and is available in 25cl bottles, but not on tap.

The brewery has already developed an international presence, with its OMER. Traditional Blond and Cuvée des Jacobins beers. Equally, the VanderGhinste Roodbruin hasn't been slow in finding its way abroad, so you should be able to source it outside of Belgium with relative ease.
